Roosevelt Roads Naval Station
On the second day of the Lambda Alpha International (LAI) Spring 2019 Puerto Rico Land Economics Weekend (LEW), the group was treated to a tour of closed U.S. Roosevelt Roads Naval Station. The former vibrant Naval facility was in an amazing state-of-disrepair. Following the tour, local developers and architects presented on land-use plans under development for the Roosevelt Roads land and facilities available for reuse.
Originally commissioned in 1943 as U.S. Naval Operations Base, Roosevelt Road grew into one of the largest naval facilities in the world with more than 100 miles of paved interior roads, complete with a large-scale airfield and a deep-water port facilities. In 1957 Roosevelt Roads was re-designated as a Naval Station. Roosevelt Roads was formally closed in 2004.
The Navy intends to dispose of the 8,650 acre site; 3,900 acres are available for reuse while the remainder of the land includes mangrove forests and wetlands.)
