Goslings: a first plunge
While walking back to my hotel along the Chicago shoreline I came upon a brood of recently hatched goslings grazing in the grass. Three adults accompanied the goslings.
After a few minutes the three adults stood up and walked over to the walkway by the water. Mama jumped into the water and one brave gosling followed her. It was good five foot plus plunge into the water - quite a feat for a gosling's first swim. One of the adults remained with the goslings on the walkway.
The remaining nine goslings paced the wall in anticipation of their first big life adventure. When the adult caretaker jumped into the water, the goslings were frantic for a moment. Then their instincts came forth as they formed a line for the ensuing plunge procession.
It was endearing to witness and then capture in pictures the emotions experienced by these youngsters. The final two goslings were in a state of disbelief that they would take the plunge.
All ten goslings made it safely to the water, went into formation and followed Mama on their first swim.
